This is a dark and bitter day for the Jewish people. The death of Yitzhak Rabin has left us shocked and bereaved. Mr Rabin was more than a leader of Israel. More than any of his contemporaries, he exemplified the spirit of Israel, a country which has shown courage in waging war, and even greater courage in the pursuit of peace. Rosh Hashanah tomorrow and Yom Kippur, on October 3, the New Year and Day of Atonement, are the holy of holies of Jewish time. Summoned by the sound of the ram's horn on the new year, we begin a period of ten days of repentance, culminating in a day of fasting and prayer on Yom Kippur. At no other time are we so acutely conscious of standing in the presence of God. For me these days will have a special resonance this year, because I have just visited Auschwitz for the first time.... |

For the past week, Jews have been observing the Passover, the festival of freedom. At its heart is the Seder service, at which we gather in our extended families and retell the biblical story of the Exodus: the slavery of the Israelites in Egypt and their eventual liberation. It is a ritual that has never lost its power to capture the imagination. For this is no mere recitation of events that happened long ago and far away. We do not so much tell the story as re-enact it.
