Good morning. And an unusual morning it is, because this must be the first time in history that a rabbi has been asked to do thought for the day by an Archbishop of Canterbury, today’s guest editor. And there’s a story behind that story.

Yitzhak Perlman, one of the world’s greatest violinists, contracted polio at the age of 4. Ever since, he’s had to wear metal braces on his legs and walk with crutches. Once when he was giving a concert, a string on his violin broke. Instead of calling for a new violin he continued to play on three strings. When the concerto was over, the audience gave him an ovation and called on him to speak. He did. He said one sentence that everyone there knew... |

Two days ago as the chancellor was delivering his pre budget report I joined some 500 politicians, policy makers, heads of charities and religious leaders at a national poverty hearing. And it was sobering to hear first hand testimony from some of the people who live in real hardship: the homeless, the elderly, those caught in the trap of low incomes, and no less than 3.4 million children in Britain.

For the first time in a long time, there have been signs of hope in the Middle East between Israelis and Palestinians. There’s been a temporary cessation in Gaza of rocket attacks on Israel, and a truce between the various Palestinian groups. Israel’s Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has, in his words, reached out the hand of peace, offering to reduce checkpoints and release frozen funds, which would have immediate humanitarian benefits.
