Oh dear, here we are again, taking part in the nation's favourite indoor sport, "Who's to blame?" This time the subject is law and order, in the wake of the tragic Demilola killing, the continuing echoes of the Macpherson Report, and various accusations and counteraccusations that have been flying around for the past few days.

Thought For The Day - 11 December 2000
Good morning. Sitting here in Jerusalem, praying as I did this morning on my hotel balcony overlooking the old city, it's hard to believe that a place as beautiful, as serene, as this should have become, as it has these last few months, the scene of such violence, anger and conflict.

There it was, a little item at the end of last week's news. A new report shows that only 15% of Britain's families, less than one in six, sit down to have a meal together. A few years ago, a writer on food, noticing the trend, gave it a name. He wrote about how, instead of the traditional family meal, nowadays people come home at different times, take a pizza out of the freezer, stick it in the microwave, and eat it watching t.v. I was in New York a few weeks ago for a gathering of world religious leaders at the United Nations. As you can imagine, there were an awful lot of speeches, so I confess that while I was there I sneaked out for a few minutes of fresh air in Central Park. And it was there that I saw an extraordinary sight.
New Yorkers tend to be health fiends, and there are always lots of them out in the park, having a jog. One of them, though, obviously didn't... |
