The controversy over organ donations in Jewish law may have left some people confused, so I want to set out the position as clearly as possible.
First, are organ donations a good thing, and does Judaism approve of them? The answer in general is yes to both questions. Saving a life is a fundamental imperative in Judaism and, if we can do so without endangering our own lives, we should.

I’ve just completed a tour of Jewish Societies at some of our larger student centres – Birmingham, Nottingham, Leeds, Manchester and London. I went firstly because Jewish students on campus should be one of our highest priorities. It was an invitation I could not refuse. Next month I will be joining the Dalai Lama at Emory University for a seminar on happiness. It appealed to me first because the Dalai Lama is, like Nelson Mandela, one of those rare figures who has led his people through suffering by forgiveness.
